Native grasslands are some of the most beautiful, biologically complex, and hardworking ecosystems in California. They are also one of the most endangered due to the spread of invasive plants, development, and agriculture, among many other factors. How can those of us living in urbanized areas increase awareness and appreciation of native grasslands within the city grid? As a case study, Jane will share about the ongoing efforts (and some exciting observations) by a committed group of volunteers at the Grassland Garden at Ninos Parkway in the South Natomas neighborhood of Sacramento.
Jane Lee is a Sacramento-based landscape designer who also loves branching out into graphic design and illustration. In all her work, she is an enthusiastic advocate of native plants, local ecologies, and design that is rooted in place. Prior to starting her own practice Mallow Root Design, she worked at Miridae, a Sacramento-based landscape design-build company with a mission of creating habitat for native plants and wildlife in urban spaces. As often as she can, she loves volunteering for local organizations like the Grassland Garden at Ninos Parkway, the Bushy Lake Restoration Project, and of course SacValley CNPS Nursery!

There will be a Sacramento Valley Chapter CNPS field trip to Grass Lake (north of Luther Pass on Highway 89, near the California/Nevada border, and south of Lake Tahoe) on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Trip leaders will be Carol Witham and Greg Kareofelas. We may be joined by members of the Bryophyte Chapter and CalFlora.
