Summary

The California Native Plant Society launched the Biodiversity in Urban Gardens (BUG) Initiative in Spring of 2026, which envisions a California where native plants are the first choice for the built environment.

The BUG Initiative builds momentum towards this vision through science, advocacy and policy change, including the compilation of an annotated bibliography, the launch of community science projects and the development of an advocacy cohort. We encourage CNPS Chapters to get involved by joining the BUG project and promoting the BUG project to your communities.

Speaker Bio

Stephanie Zullo is a plant and environmental scientist who grew up in the New York City area and moved to California in 2012. Stephanie got involved with Sac Valley CNPS Chapter because she did not want to buy a lawnmower for her midtown house. Instead, she replaced the grass with native landscaping and went on to join the Sac Valley CNPS board from 2014-2020. Stephanie earned her bachelor’s from Cornell University, her master’s from the University of Illinois and her doctorate from UC Davis. Stephanie joined CNPS’s staff in 2025 as the Project Manager for the Biodiversity in Urban Gardens Initiative.
