Homegrown Habitat

Biodiversity is the foundation of healthy ecosystems

Native plants have evolved alongside the native creatures in our region over millennia. The needs of these plants and animals are intertwined, so they need each other to survive. Plants from other areas of the world do not provide local native wildlife with the resources they need. By planting and conserving native species, we create resilient landscapes that support biodiversity, conserve water, and reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

- About Us -

Homegrown Habitat was established in 2019 by members of the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Native Plant Society along with other environmental leaders to address the detrimental impacts of urbanization in our region.

The mission of Homegrown Habitat is to bring the natural world to the public and engage them in supporting nature by expanding native plant habitat where they live, work and play.

- The Inspiration -

Dr. Doug Tallamy is an entomologist and visionary native plant enthusiast. Several of us attended his presentation in 2019. His call to action inspired us to start Homegrown Habitat.

In his 2007 book Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants, Tallamy describes the consequences of “uncontrolled expansion”: the loss and fragmentation of wildlife habitat across America, and how ceaseless land development drives biodiversity loss. He has now started Homegrown National Park.

Is it a wonder we were inspired to start Homegrown Habitat?

Our Projects

Habitat Expanding Collaborations

We partner with schools, businesses, farmers, community groups, and government entities to increase native plant habitat and expand public knowledge of their benefits by using native plants in public spaces and landscapes. We are looking for partners to add native plants to their landscape projects. We develop a plant list, landscape plan, and provide funds for the plants.
