As climate change shifts the regional distribution of our native plants, habitat connectivity will be a critical factor in the success of their migration and adaptation. This research and landscape planning project explores how changes to the spatial structure of urban landscapes could significantly improve the connectivity of urban plant habitat. By relating climate trends at the state scale to the movement of propagules between patches, we can understand how local planning and management actions can impact biodiversity at larger scales.
Brenna Castro Carlson is a landscape architect at Atlas Lab Inc. in Sacramento. Brenna’s work focuses on sustainable, resilient design that is grounded in the principles of urban ecology and fueled by curiosity about the plants and ecosystems of California. She holds a Master in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley, College of Environmental Design, and a Bachelor of Science in Landscape of Architecture from UC Davis with highest honors and a Minor in Plant Biology.
